In Oracle to format results within sqlplus prompt there are formatting output commands like:
col COLUMN_NAME format a20...
By default, Mysql prints column names.
When you need to print results without the column name, let'say we do not want print the name of the column (user) as in this example ...

mysql> select user from user;
+------------------+
| user             |
+------------------+
| cust03              | 
| cust02           | 
| cust01           | 
| root             | 
+------------------+
3 row in set (0.00 sec)

On Mysql, you need to set the formatting parameters before starting your session, on the enviroment.
So set column-names=FALSE:

$ mysqlserver01> mysql -p --column-names=FALSE

Enter password: 
mysql> use mysql;
Database changed
mysql> select user from user;
+------------------+
| cust03           | 
| cust02           | 
| cust01           | 
| root             | 
+------------------+
3 row in set (0.00 sec)
