--  current_timestamp function return    timestamp with time zone 

postgres=# select current_timestamp;

             now              
------------------------------
 2015-05-12 11:02:14.07732+00

now() or current_timestamp functions return same output

postgres=# select now(), current_timestamp; now | now ------------------------------+------------------------------ 2015-05-12 11:12:08.34128+00 | 2015-05-12 11:12:08.34128+00

-- when inserting or updating current_timestamp into a date column, postgres is going to keep only day info

postgres=# create table users (created_date date); postgres=# insert into users values (current_timestamp); INSERT 0 1 postgres=# select * from users; created_date -------------- 2015-05-12

To record on table all the timestamp just create a timestamp datatype column

postgres=# alter table users add column lastlogin_timestamp timestamp; ALTER TABLE postgres=# insert into users values (current_timestamp,current_timestamp); INSERT 0 1 postgres=# select * from users; created_date | lastlogin_timestamp --------------+---------------------------- 2011-05-12 | 2011-05-12 | 2011-05-12 11:10:32.010267
